Connecting Commercial Dog Food and Dog Ear Infections

Recently I have been researching a connection between commercial dog foods and dog ear infections. I have changed my dogs food as he has an ear infection right now. It occurred to me that when he was on IAMS he never had ear infection and when I switched him to Pedigree his ear infections became chronic, at lest in his right ear .So I switched him back to IAMS and will post the results. I also plan to add yogurt to his meal twice a week Meanwhile , I stumbled on to a solution I have never tried . It is listed below. If anyone has experience with is home remedy for dog ear infections, let me know

16 oz. bottle Isopropyl alcohol (or witch hazel)
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 drops Gentian Violet 1% Solution
Mix all ingredients in the alcohol bottle & shake. (make sure you shake before every application).
Treatment: Fill ear with solution & massage gently for 30 seconds and wipe with a tissue. Fill a second time and just wipe without massaging. The dog will shake the excess out. Be careful, the Gentian Violet could stain. I use a eye dropper to fill the ear.
Treatment:
2 times per day for the first 2 weeks
1 time per day for the next 2 weeks
1 time per month thereafter

Cleaning Your Dogs Ears to Prevent Infections

If you own a dog chances are he will develop an ear infection. I know all of you love your dogs so noticing that he has one should be th easy part fo you. If you notice your pooch shaking his head, excessively scratching his ear even with no fleas present an ear infection is likely the cause. Most of the time you can trace it back where the ear infection came from often time you cannot. If you take you dog swimming regularly the chances of a real dog ear infection improve dramatically. Just like human ear, dog ears aren’t made for accepting excess amounts of water , moisture or dirt. One hair in the wrong place can grow into a whopper of a dog ear infection. Most of the time it’s a yeast infection and dealing with them may require a veterinarian visit. Fidos ear will drain fluids as his body tries to combat the infection. As the condition worsens, a foul smell will be noticed. Hold on to your wallet those are never fun at the checkout desk. That’s all the more reason to concentrate a measure of effort towards prevention.

Cleaning your Dogs Ears, Prevention First
How often do you clean your own ears? I bet it frequently. Your ears are not exposed to the same environment as your dogs ears. You don’t have flaps covering your most sensitive fragile parts of you ear. I good cleaning with a mild diluted solution of distilled vinegar and rubbing alcohol will do the trick. The alcohol cleans and the vinegar has natural antibiotic that restore the chemical balance inside your dogs ears. Take an eye dropper and squirt a 2 ML of your solution on your dogs ear. Make sure you rub it in and allow him to give his a head a good shake. Repeat as necessary. Wipe the excess off with a cotton ball. Using a cloth or any other fabric may lead to more dog ear infections because a piece of lint is all that is necessary to start another dog ear infection. Now here is the most important part of this process. Your dog is not going to like the fact that you want to clean his ears. I bet he didn’t like a bath the first time either. Make your time with your dog ear infection prevention a time where he is rewarded. Get you treats ready in advance of your cleaning. H will come running the next time you want to clean his ears to prevent those nasty dog ear infections.

A Common Cure for Dog Ear Infections

Generally speaking treating a dog ear infection is not too hard. However some dogs can get a pretty stubborn yeast infection and you will have to turn yourself into a compulsive obsessive person with regard to treating their ear. My dog doesn’t even like the sight of me sitting on the patio paper towel and solution bottle in hand. When his infection is really bad and touching in or around his ear causes him pain and distress. The solution you use should be diluted and I have found that warming up the solution a touch in the microwave seems to soothe his pain. I will apply a diluted combination of rubbing alcohol and distilled vinegar 4 times a day and I apply it liberally. The vinegar has natural antibiotic properties and the alcohol help clean the ear canal and outer ear. Rubbing it in, if he will let you breaks up the dried fluids that have formed in his ear and restores the natural function of the ear. Sometimes I will pin his ear flap up to let air dry out the ear better. 3 or 4 days of this kind of treatment usually clears it up. Keep a close watch on it as a trip to the vet for a prescription antibiotic may become necessary to cure the infection. The guy you see in this picture is ear infection free at the moment. Yippee

Cleaning Dog Ears Means No Ear Infections

Some dog breeds are much more susceptible to ear infections. If you live in humid climates and your dog has floppy type ears you can count on an occasional ear infection , especially in the summer months. Mixing a solution of diluted rubbing alcohol and vinegar is good maintenance for prevention. Add about 2 mil of the solution to your dogs ear and rub it in , sort of speak Allow him to shake out the excess , not that you can stop him form doing that. Next take a cotton balls and dry the excess. Once a week, and you should keep the yeast ear infections at bay. My own Golden retriever suffers form this affliction. It becomes very pain of left unchecked and unkempt. Keep his ears as clean as you can.
